“It’s great to discover the cultural relics and experience archaeology by hand! The moment I discovered the cultural relics, I felt so excited, as if I got a perfect score in the exam.” 12-year-old primary school student Yao Shengtai said. Yesterday, in the courtyard of the Xinle Site in Shenyang, 20 elementary and middle school students held brushes and shovel in hand, carefully pulling apart the layers of soil where the "treasures" were buried. The Shenyang Xinle Site Museum is the first to open simulated archaeology to the public.
The staff in the courtyard of the Xinle Site dug a square pit with a side length of 5 meters and a depth of 20 cm. According to the on-site archaeological expert, such a square has a special name in archaeology called Tan Fang. According to experts, in fact, the original soil layer of the Xinle site is more than 1 meter deep to see the cultural relics, but the children who signed up for simulated archaeology online are all primary and middle school students, and they are afraid that the exploration of the site will be too deep to the children.
The archaeological tools in the hands of the children are varied, but they are all real guys. There are flat-headed hand shovel, peach-shaped hand shovel, brushes, bamboo sticks, etc., as well as small red flags that mark cultural relics. The classmates who got the tools rushed into the expedition with excitement. Make the experts laugh. Experts say that in true archaeology, there must be no more than a dozen people in a single exploratory party, only one or two people, otherwise the underground cultural relics will be destroyed. And the children are not clear about the use of archaeological tools. The flat-headed hand shovel requires the cutting edge to be parallel to the surface of the probe, scraping layer by layer. After digging out the suspected object, clean the surface of the utensil with a brush, and then judge by the texture and ornamentation of the utensil. Bamboo skewers are used to remove dirt from human and animal carcasses.
Under the explanation of the experts, the students explored treasures with a professional spirit. A pupil wearing glasses shouted: "I found it!" Everyone gathered, some scraped with a shovel, some with a brush, and after removing the floating soil, it was a small piece of white porcelain. But experts laughed and said that this is nothing more than modern construction waste. Some students dug up pieces of glass bottles, and some found large stones.
Experts introduced that they buried 100 or so pieces of simulated pottery pieces from 7,200 years ago at a depth of 20 centimeters below the exploratory site. The big ones are big fists, mainly because the children do not understand the order and essentials of archaeology. Archeology must first remove the floating soil and dig into the raw soil. Because the surface soil layers are traces of modern people’s activities, the raw soil layers in Shenyang are generally grayish-yellow and vary from place to place. The Zhongjie area needs to dig more than ten meters to see the raw soil layer, while the Xinle area only needs 1 Meters can. This is because the Zhongjie area has been the center of Shenyang people's activities since ancient times, and the soil layer is getting thicker and thicker. The Xinle area is relatively sparsely populated.
Lu Haiying, curator of the Shenyang Xinle Site Museum, said that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the discovery of the Xinle Site. This simulated archaeological activity provides children with a hands-on practice project to participate in the archaeological excavation of cultural relics during the summer, and teaches the basics of archaeology through on-site explanations by experts. Knowledge and skills to experience the science, mystery and sense of accomplishment of archaeological excavations.
